The plants listed here are grown in Richmond. You can pick them up there
if that is convenient, or I can deliver them for a nominal charge near
Berkeley or Richmond.
I try to keep this list up to date, but some material may be sold out or
not ready yet, and of course prices may change. For details, please call
or email. Thanks!

Agave hybrid
1 gallon: $10
bare root: $5
nice plants - maybe attenuata X vilmoriniana - firm and erect but not spiny.
Adults get 2 to 3 feet tall, inflorescence is spicate.

Agave stricta types
5 gallon: $30
Various hedgehog type agaves. Very formal looking, leaves are usually
needle-tipped and NOT child-safe. Can be one of the most beautiful agaves.

Aloe bainsii (barberae)
2" pot: $10
5 gallon: $50
larger size: inquire
The largest aloe. Will grow happily in Sunset zone 17, barring an extreme freeze.
I have a magnificent specimen in the ground with a trunk perhaps
two feet in diameter (yes, in diameter) and about 15 feet tall. Quite fast
growing.

Aloe dichotoma
fist-sized seedlings: $10
The second largest aloe. Probably will not survive outside in Bay Area
due to excessive rain. Pot subject. Very striking when large.

Aloe plicatilis
1 gallon: $10 - $20
seedlings: $5
The fan aloe. Nice in a pot, will grow well, fast, and quite large in
the ground. Good in zone 17 but damaged by hard freezes or very wet winters.

Asparagus, various ornamental types
seedlings: $5 - $10
The ornamental asparagi give an extraordinary texture - green fluffy foam.
Like
this,
this,
this,
this, or
this.
It is not widely known how large they will get in the ground -
A. retrofractus can get stems over 6 feet tall and an inch in diameter; makes
a striking specimen.

Boophane disticha
very strong
one-year seedlings: $10
older plants: $20 - $30
These are summer-growing fan-leafed bulbs from South Africa.
Both the leaves and the flowers are showy.
Here is a
picture of B. disticha
in leaf behind a B. haemanthoides that is flowering in front of it.
I have succeeded with these outside in the Bay Area, though very heavy rains
may abort the flowers that would normally come in spring. Deciduous
in winter. Grown from seed here.
Probably 4 years or more from seed to flower under optimum conditions.
Will bloom in a 5 gallon container.

Boophane haemanthoides
several year old plants: $20 - $40
These are winter-growing fan-leafed bulbs from South Africa,
the perfect complement to B. disticha.
Both the leaves and the
flowers are showy.
Seems perfectly hardy outside in the Bay Area.
Deciduous in spring, flowers from bare bulb in late summer,
then develops leaves autumn through spring. Grown from seed here.
Probably 4 years or more from seed to flower under optimum conditions.

Brunsvigia josephinae
several year old plants: $20 - $50
Possibly the largest of the winter-growing amaryllis relatives,
the bulbs can get larger than a football and the flower head (umbel)
can be 2 feet in diameter. The broad leaves are attractive and look a
bit like an Agave attenuata.
Takes essentially forever to mature. I have flowered these
in 5-gallon containers. Hardy in the ground, but can be harrassed by heavy rains
late in the season. Dormant most of the summer, flowers about September in
the northern hemisphere, and leafed out fall through spring.
As with most of the big African amaryllids, the dry seed pod/flower head
is a spectacular ornament. From seed collected and grown here.

Cycas panzihuanensis
one-leaf seedlings: $25
Said to be one of the fastest growing and hardiest of the palm-ferns.
This seed came from a reputable source, but is unproven. Probably
faster than the Sago palm (Cycas revoluta).

Cycas revoluta - Sago Palm

several year old plants with ~ 2 inch stem: $20
5 gallon with ~ 4 inch stem: $50
The most well known of the palmferns (cycads). Reliably hardy and beautiful;
good entry-level for the beginning palmfern enthusiast. Can
be very slow in cold-summer climates, needs all the heat it can
get in Bay Area zone 17.

Cycas thouarsii
1 gallon: $30
A very nice, fast growing foliage plant. Will survive outdoors with protection, but not
for general landscape use. Best as a container subject.

Dasylirion longissimum
one-leaf seedlings: $5
medium small seedlings: $15
5 gallon: $50
One of the "grass trees" - the leaves on this one are sometimes over a yard
long, very thin and stiff, but not spiny. Very striking. Hardy outdoors,
very drought tolerant.

Dasylirion wheeleri
choice bluish seedlings with provenance data: $25
5 gallon: $40
A grass tree with somewhat wider leaves than D. longissimum, and with
spines on the leaf margins. Sometimes has a bluish cast.

Dioon edule types
one-leaf seedlings: $15
older plants: $30
A hardy palmfern from Mexico. Similar to the Sago palm.

Dypsis lutescens
tiny sprouts: $7
Indoor palm from Madagascar. May also work outside with some shelter.

Dysosma (see Podophyllum)

Encephalartos frederici-guilielmi
several years old seedlings: $45
An African palmfern (cycad) with bluish leaves. Very hardy in the Bay
Area.

Furcraea (longaeva?)
small bare root: $7
1 gallon: $10
5 gallon: $50
giant: $200
This plant has the 'look and feel' of a large agave or yucca (century
plant) but the leaves are softer and not spiny, making it perfectly safe
for children and inebriates. Will get very large in the ground or stay
small in a pot. Like some agaves, the plants flower once and produce
tiny plantlets on the flower stem.

Gasterworthia 'American Beauty'
nice mature specimens: $20
A hybrid of Gasteria and Haworthia pumila (maxima). Pretty, compact succulent
with raised white pearly bumps on the leaves. Looks a lot like the
Haworthia parent.

Gunnera chilensis (G. tinctoria)
5 gallon: $40
A potentially giant foliage plant that requires moisture. Will grow well
in a pot but can be used in ponds. The leaves become enourmous when grown
in the ground, but will remain manageable in a 5 gallon container. Deciduous in
winter - these still have leaves (October) but will loose them later.

Haemanthus coccineus
mature 1 gallon: $20
giant old specimen with many heads: $100
A South African bulb with nice leaves and flowers. Dormant in summer, flowers
in early fall, then has very broad leaves all winter. Can grow outside in
the Bay Area with no irrigation. Leaves may be damaged by a hard freeze,
but bulb in ground should be fine. I have seen the leaves grow to perhaps
2 feet long.

Macrozamia miquelii
one-leaf seedlings: $20
Palmfern from Australia. Should be OK outside.

Massonia depressa
mature plants in bud: $20
Beautiful winter-growing bulb from South Africa. Has a pair of leaves flat
on the ground, often with purple spots on a green background, and a showy
flower nestled in between. Hardy outdoors in the Bay Area and needs no
summer water.

Otatea - weeping mexican bamboo
1 gallon: $25
5 gallon: $50
Larger sizes e.g. 15 gallon: inquire
One of the nicest bamboos that does NOT run. The foliage is very ferny or
feathery, and if unrestrained the
stems
weep toward the ground under the weight of the many narrow leaves.

Podophyllum pleianthum (Dysosma)
1 gallon: $25
A peculiar perennial from Asia. Produces one or two large (to over a foot
in diameter) rounded leaves on short stems. Closely related to the
Mayapple of eastern North America, this produces large sweet-tasting but
very seedy fruits if pollenated. Spectacular and hardy in the shade;
dormant and leafless in the winter.

Rhodocoma gigantea
1 gallon: $10
5 gallon: $40
A large, attractive grass relative (restio) from South Africa. Interesting
texture with bamboo-like stems and fluffy, fernlike foliage topped by tall
plumelike flower spikes. A superior alternative to some of the grasses
that have become popular but that quickly become untidy; this restio looks
good with minimal grooming.

Veltheimia capensis
strong seedlings: $10
Winter-growing South African bulb. Like a miniature hot poker flower over
attractive crisped leaves. Takes full sun, flowers for a long period fall
through mid-winter. Summer dormant.

Xanthorhoea preisii
small seedlings: $10
Australian "grass tree". This is more like a large tuft of perennial
grass; for me has never developed a trunk. The leaves are very fine, and
the plant seems to be as tough as nails, even tolerating deep shade, though
sun is preferable. Makes
spectacular flower spikes in summer with huge amounts of nectar that
attract bees and hummingbirds.
Truly a superior plant for the mediterranean garden.

Yucca rigida
small seedlings: $7
Very showy bluish yucca. Leaves are rigid enough to require care with the
leaf tips. Becomes eventually a small tree.

Yucca rostrata
small seedlings: $7
A showy blue yucca. Leaves are formal and stiff but soft enough not to
hurt casual hands.
